Identity Masks

I usually introduce this project after my 4th grade artists create their self-portrait paintings. As a part of that unit, we learn all about how our identities are complex and how who we are as individuals goes beyond our appearance. We begin by exploring and unraveling the many layers of our identities and brainstorming ways we can use symbols and imagery to visualize who we are as individuals.

After sketching out their ideas, my young artists use plaster strips on face molds to create a base for their mask. From there they use paper mache pulp (CelluClay) and other mixed media elements to create their masks. Here are a few examples of their work- each one just as unique as the artists who created them!
