Surrealist Paintings

Check out these Surrealist inspired paintings created by my 3rd grade artists!

For this project we began by learning one point perspective and drawing both a landscape and a room. Watch my videos below for a tutorial!

During the following class, we examined the work of various Surrealist artists from the past and present. Some of the artists we looked at included Salvador Dalí, Remedios Varo, René Magritte, Dorothea Tanning, Man Ray, Leonora Carrington, David Alabo, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Konan Lim, and Rob Gonsalves.

These young artists then worked to combine reality, imagination, and their subconscious within a one point perspective landscape or room. After finalizing their drawings with sharpies, they began using tempera paint.

We revisited how to mix secondary and tertiary colors, as well as tints and shades. I only provide them with primary (red, yellow, blue) and neutral (black, white, brown) colors so they need to do the majority of the mixing on their own.

Finally, we learn about texture and how to show variation between the different surfaces (ex. wooden floors and grass). Watch this video as I demonstrate how to paint various textures they incorporate into their backgrounds!
